Yll OPTIONS - WHAT DO EMPLOYERS LOOK FOR?

*
*

Qualifications and experience can be important when you’re looking for jobs, but employers are also interested in other qualities you may have.
What are they?

If you want to impress, think about the following comments made by local employers and training providers:

  • ‘Young people do not turn up to interviews’
If you are not going to attend an interview you should ring the employer (or the Connexions Centre if you prefer) to let them know you have changed your mind. If employers see young people as unreliable they will look elsewhere for employees.
  • ‘Poor standard of application forms’
An employer expects you to take care with presentation. If your application is poor, what will your work be like? You should always take a copy of your application form and do a practice version first.
  • ‘Inappropriate interview dress’
Personal presentation is important. As an employee you will be a representative of the employer’s business, they have people to impress too!
  • ‘Poor interview preparation’
You need to show enthusiasm for, and interest in, the job. Just turning up for an interview is not enough. What does the company do? Does it provide a service, make things, or sell goods? Company information is available from The Connexions Service.

All this may sound tough, but most employers are aware that you may be nervous and want you to do well. What can you be doing now to be prepared?
