YEAR OUT

*
*

If the idea of a year out before Higher Education is an appealing one then you are in good company: at least 20,000 students opt for this each year.

*

"Students who take a well-planned, structured year out are more likely to be satisfied with, and complete, their chosen course. Students who take a gap year are often more mature, responsible and disciplined."

UCAS Chief Executive Tony Higgins.

You may wish to delay entering Higher Education in order to broaden your experiences. Some work experience may also be an entry requirement of the course.

Having said this you do need to consider the idea carefully. Although many institutions are positive about a gap year you need to check how admissions tutors for your chosen course regard it. You may also get out of the habit of studying, or the course may include time abroad or be a lengthy course already without delaying entry.

A 'Year Out' - Why Do It?

  • Gives you time to become more independent/mature
  • Enables you to see what sort of work you like
  • You could learn a new language or skill
  • Your CV/Personal Statement will look more interesting
  • You could earn some money
  • You may just want a break from study
*

You Need To Be Aware That:

  • You need to organise and plan well ahead - for some year out options you must apply some time before you go.
  • You may need to apply for Deferred Entry in order to have a university place to come back to rather than trying to apply while out of the country!
  • You should be sure your chosen institution/course welcomes a gap year, or whether they would want you to do something specific or course-related.
  • On your UCAS form admissions tutors like to see what you have learned/ hope to learn from your year out and how you would use these skills on the course.

Ideas for A Year Out:

  • Voluntary work in Britain or abroad
  • Employment - this may or may not be related to your HE course
  • Training to gain additional skills - e.g. learn a language, develop IT skills
  • Year in Industry Scheme
  • Travelling

Your Careers and Connexions Centre will have a wide range of information and ideas including: Community Service Volunteers, Au Pair America, Year In Industry, Camp America and many more.
