PUBIC LICE

*
*

These are small tiny insects which live in coarse body hair. This means they can also be found in armpit hair, on hairy legs and chests as well as on pubic hair. They have in the past been found in eyelashes and in beards. Finding them is really difficult, they are about 2mm in size, skin coloured and stay still in light. Itching may take 2 or 3 weeks after you have caught them and so the first sign can often be black powder in your underwear. The powder is the droppings from the lice. Other sign may be minute specks of blood this is because they live by sucking blood. Pubic Lice are very rarely found on the scalp. It is possible, but unlikely, to catch crabs from toilet seats, bedding and clothing even though they can't jump or fly.

To get rid of crabs is easy and involves buying an over the counter lotion or cream from the chemist. By simply applying this all over the body and leaving it for 12 hours (usually overnight) before washing it off usually kills off the lice. Having said this further applications of the lotion or cream may be needed. It is always advised that sexual partners are treated at the same time and any clothing and bedding should be washed before further use.
