Many young people experiment with drugs and alcohol. It can sometimes cause problems however if you do something that you wouldn't normally do whilst 'under the influence' or 'off your face'. For example lots of people have unintended or unprotected sex that may not be as safe as they would choose after taking alcohol or drugs.
There are a few things you can do to look after yourself if you think you might get yourself into this situation:
- If you are going to be drinking, eat something before you start
- Alternate between non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks
- Take your time with your drink, you don't have to compete with your mates
- Make a deal with a friend to look out for each other, to steer each other away from harm<

- Watch your drink and keep it with you. In these days of 'date rape' drugs such as Rohypnol (Rufees) and GHB and drink 'spiking', you don't want to risk leaving it unattended
- Carry condoms with you so that you will be prepared if you do have sex
- Don't Mix drinks e.g. Beer and spirits (including alco-pops) as this may increase the influence of alcohol
- Don't leave your friends on their own if they are very drunk as they may have an accident or need looking after
