Quitting smoking

Giving up smoking is the best thing a smoker can do, to improve their health, their appearance and their bank balance!

Many people don't realise that after quitting smoking the body starts to immediately repair itself, making the smoker feel better and fitter than they have in a long time. Cigarettes

What's in a cigarette?

Tobacco smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, some of which are naturally in the tobacco leaves and some that are created when the cigarette is burned. Some of these chemicals are also used in rat poison, nail polish remover, batteries, fertilizers and bathroom cleaners.

There's also enough tar in cigarette to fill a smoker's lungs with a coffee cup full over the course of a year.

Everyone knows smoking is bad for them. But do you know why?

There are many reasons why smoking is bad, and when you think about it, there aren't really any good points to smoking. The problem is, once people start, it's hard to stop. But it's worth it.

Types of cigarette

Cigarettes vary in size, colour, flavour and strength, with some being flavoured with menthol, liquorice and other fragrances. Some brands are seen as more fashionable than others and many people smoke the same brand as their friends. However, the chemicals in a cigarette are all powerful and have an immediate effect on the smoker.

Addiction

Getting hooked on smoking can happen really quickly because nicotine, which is in cigarettes, is highly addictive. It's also easy to become addicted when parents or older brothers and sisters smoke, or if parents don't mind someone smoking. Also, if friends smoke, they sometimes offer each other cigarettes that are accepted even when that person doesn't really want one.

Smoking can appear to have a positive effect similar to the way other drugs can affect your mood. However this is only temporary and any positive effect ('rush') from nicotine is more to do with the fact that the cigarette has taken something bad away (the craving). This inevitably leads to the smoker wanting more, as it can only satisfy the craving for a short time.
