Passive smoking
Many people find that they are forced to breathe other people's smoke, including smoke from parents, friends and even in public places.
Passive smoking can cause problems like smoking can, particularly health problems such as asthma, coughing and 'glue ear'. It can also make people's hair and clothes smell of smoke, even if they aren't smokers themselves.
Effects on your Body
Smoking kills one person in Britain every four minutes. That's the same as a full Jumbo Jet crashing every day for a year. Most deaths come from illnesses and diseases caused by smoking, such as emphysema (described as having a plastic bag over your lungs), Leukaemia and heart disease. It's not just lung cancer that can be caused by smoking - other cancers include throat, nose, larynx, kidney, bladder and stomach cancer.
Other illnesses, which can be experienced within days of someone starting smoking include shortness of breath, coughing and quicker heartbeat. The more you smoke and the more regularly you smoke, the greater the effect on your body.
20 cigarettes a day per year means 150ml of tar (the volume of a coffee cup) is deposited in the lungs. This can shorten the life of the individual by an average of 5 years.
