  • Speed

Description

  • Speed is a crystalline powder which is often white/grey but can also come in a variety of colours including pink and green

Use

  • Speed can be swallowed, sniffed, smoked, injected or mixed with liquid and drunk
  • It is a Class B drug, Class A when prepared for injection

Effects

  • Speed gives users a burst of energy and makes them talkative
  • It quickens the heart beat and breathing rate
  • Speed supresses the appetite

Risks

  • Tiredness and depression are subsequent effects for two or more days
  • Some users become tense and anxious and feel unhealthy
  • High doses can cause hallucination and panic
  • Long-term use puts a strain on the heart and can be fatal
  • If used heavily the drug can cause users to experience an amphetamine psychosis. This includes depression and paranoia (feeling unsafe) and could mean that the user needs to be admitted to a hospital psychiatric unit until these feelings subside

Law

  • The maximum prison sentence for possessing amphetamines is 5 years plus an unlimited fine
  • Supplying amphetamines( including giving it to a friend) is 14 years imprisonment and an unlimited fine
  • This drug is illegal to have in your possession unless prescribed by a doctor (GP)
