Safer drinking Guidelines
The government sets out very clear guidelines for what is considered safe drinking levels for adults. If used in moderation, alcohol can be safe, which is why it isn't illegal; however, alcohol misuse is common in the UK and can cause a number of problems for people when under the influence, when recovering from the effects of alcohol and when drinking alcohol heavily on a regular basis.
If you are going out drinking it is a good idea to do the following:
- Eat something before drinking
- Alternate between non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks
- Drink at a reasonable pace, don't play 'keep-up' games
- Avoid crisps and nuts which make you thirsty
- Drink plenty of water
- Try and make sure there is a sober person with you
- Don't leave drinks unattended as they could be open to being 'spiked' with a 'date rape' drug
Friends
Peer pressure makes a difference to underage drinking in the UK. If all your friends are drinking and you don't you might feel awkward and left out, even poked fun at. Chances are you've seen your mate absolutely hammered being annoying and embarrassing (and probably sick!). The bonus of being the sober one is that when your friends are feeling really rough and emptying their insides, you'll be the one that they're grateful to in the morning for looking after them.
